There is an exciting new music theatre scene in Britain, encompassing a wealth of hard-to-categorise, music-driven work emerging from festivals, progressive theatres, independent artists and companies. NBMT is an artist-led initiative to help identify and promote this work and bring it to new audiences in the UK and internationally.
Guy Coolen, artistic director of Operadagen, Rotterdam, invited ERRATICA director Patrick Eakin Young to put a group of British artists together to visit the festival and attend Music Theatre NOW, an international music theatre conference, in May 2016. Selected by an esteemed panel of theatre producers and curators, these are eleven of the most exciting music theatre companies and artists currently working in Britain, producing devised theatre, black-box opera, live art or experimental performance that tests the possibilities of music to structure the form and narrative of a theatrical work.
Since 2016, NBMT has continued to showcase new British work to presenters, producers and fellow artists across the world, most recently at the 2018 ISPA Congress in New York.
New British Music Theatre is supported by Arts Council England and the British Council.
